What is an Irregular Verb?

An irregular verb is a word that follows different rules of changing the form to reflect tenses. In general, you only have to use the ending "-d," "-ed," or "-ied." Here are some examples:

  • escape - escaped;
  • enjoy - enjoyed;
  • try - tried.

But for passive voice, perfect and past tense irregular verbs have unique forms that do not follow the standard rule. Each word in the irregular verbs list doesn't follow any general pattern, so you have to learn them separately. Usually, there are several special lessons in school to learn and remember the list of irregular verbs.

How to Read the List of Irregular Verbs in English?

The list with irregular verbs in English contains three columns. The first column demonstrates the infinitive or the base form of the verb. You use it to express action or describe the state of something without changing the form.

The second and third columns contain irregular past tense verbs. The 2nd column relates to using verb words in sentences with the past simple. Here are some examples:

  1. I went to the stadium yesterday.
  2. He always drove carefully
  3. She knew a lot from the list of English irregular verbs.

The 3rd column shows the form of verbs that you have to use for sentences with perfect tenses and passive voice.

  1. I have finished my homework.
  2. They had already left when I arrived.
  3. The article was written by a journalist.
